Project Brief

The project activity consists of four new thermal power plants using renewable biomass to generate electricity in the Brazilian state of Roraima. Roraima is the northernmost state of the country. As of 2022, the state grid is not connected to the national grid. Four large sets of diesel generators supply most of the states electric demand. In 2020, Oxe Energia bought the rights and the PPAs, through its SPEs, and is finishing the plants installation. Oxe acquired the rights to explore existing Acacia plantations spread around the location of the plants and has plans to buy and lease land in order to plant eucalyptus. These will be the main source of biomass used by the project activity. Oxe partnered up with ComBio to manage the whole operation from biomass to power generation due to the latter’s experience with biomass fueled boilers. The four plants follow the same design and capacity and are grouped two-by-two in two separate locations, close to the acacia plantations. As per the PPA, each plant must run at least half of the time, but may provide more power whenever the system requires it. This means that the project activities are expected to reduce 91.643 tCO2e per year during the first crediting period of the project. Therefore, GHG emission reductions are 916.429 MtCO2e over the 10 years of the crediting period. Besides contributing to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13, the project is expected to contribute to SDG7, SDG 9 and SDG 12.
