Mt. Coffee Hydro Power Plant (MCHPP) rehabilitation project was launched by the Government of Liberia (GoL) in 2012 with the aim of rehabilitating Liberia’s pre-war 64 MW power plant, which was destroyed during the civil crisis in 1990. Therefore, GoL received funds from the European Investment Bank (EIB), Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW), Government of Norway and Millenium Challenge Coorperation (MCC) to facilitate the implementation of the Mt. Coffee Hydro Power Rehabilitation Project. Being a rehabilitation of an already existing run-of-river plant, the impacts of the project on the environment and society were on the whole judged to be limited and manageable, but the actual implementation of the project, and specifically the environmental and social management plans, has required innovation, adaptation, and sensitivity to the post conflict context of Liberia.
