Project Brief | The project activity “Curitiba Landfill Gas to Energy Project” encompasses collection and destruction/utilization of landfill gas (LFG) at the landfill named CGR Iguaçu, which is owned and operated by the solid waste management company Estre Ambiental S/A (hereinafter named “ESTRE”). The main objective of the project activity is to avoid greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of methane (CH4) into the atmosphere through efficient collection and destruction of LFG by flaring and also through its utilization for electricity generation, thus promoting GHG emission reductions. Moreover, since share of collected LFG will be utilized as fuel for electricity generation in an electricity generation facility. It currently covers an area of 389.906,00 m2. The landfill started receiving municipal solid waste (MSW) in 2010, having received all necessary environmental licenses for its operation since then. The landfill currently receives over 79,000 tons per month of MSW from the municipalities of Curitiba and other located within its metropolitan region, and it is expected that this amount will increase over time before the landfill is closed. |
