Project Brief

The Proposed NamNgum1 extention project is identified and developed by Electricite Du Laos located in Keoudom District, Vientiane Province of Lao PDR about 70 km north of Vientiane, the
capital of Lao PDR on the main stream of the Nam Ngum River, a left-bank primary tributary of the Mekong River.

The nominal installed capacity of the project is 80 MW7 (the actual installed capacity is 2 x 40.8MW turbines), with estimated annual power generation 382.56 GWh. The net generated electricity from the project activity will be supplied to the regional grid consisting of Thailand power grid and the Lao power grid.

The purpose of the project activity is to produce renewable energy using hydro power for supplying to grid. In the absence of the project activity equivalent amount of electricity would have been
generated by the operation of grid connected fossil fuel-based power plants. The Project activity thus reduces the anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) in to the atmosphere associated with the equivalent amount of electricity generation from the fossil fuel-based grid connected power plant. The project activity commissioned dated 28/05/2018 which is date of synchronisation with grid.

The estimated annual average and the total CO2e emission reduction by the project activity over the first renewable crediting period of 10 years are expected to be 214,043 tCO2e and 2,140,430 tCO2e respectively.
