Project Brief

The Proposed Nam Chiane project is located in ThaThom District, Xaysomboun Province of Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) on the Nam Chiane river, a left branch of upstream section of Nam Ngiep River.

The proposed Nam Chiane project has nominal installed  capacity of 104 MW and actual installed capacity is 107.22MW. The project activity has employed state of the art 2 number pelton turbines having individual capacity 53.61MW.  The net generated electricity is supplied  to the regional grid as per the Power Purchase agreement.

The project activity has created 2 reservoirs (south and north reservoirs) and power house.  The purpose of the project activity is to meet the power demand in Lao PDR by producing renewable energy using hydro power which is supplied to grid. In the absence of the project activity, equivalent amount of electricity would have been generated by the operation of grid connected fossil fuel-based power plants. The Project activity thus reduces the anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) in to the atmosphere associated with the equivalent amount of electricity generation from the fossil fuel-based grid connected power plant. The estimated annual electricity generation by the project activity is 448.2 GWh. The project activity commissioned dated 28/05/2018.

The estimated annual average and the total CO2e emission reduction by the project activity over the crediting period of 10 years are expected to be 250,769 tCO2e and 2,507,690 tCO2e respectively.

The project is expected to contribute 5 SDGs which are SDG 7, 8, 9, 11 and 13.
