Project Brief

Artvin Hydroelectic Power Plant has been developed by Doğuş Enerji Üretim ve Ticaret Anonim Şirketi. The aim of the project is to produce electrical energy and supply it to the Turkish national grid thereby avoiding generation of equivalent quantum of electricity in fossil fuel power plants which would have supplied electricity to the grid in absence of the project activity. There are no purposes such as irrigation and flood control. It provides cheaper energy for industrialists and therefore, it gains advantage in the competitive environment.

By means of reducing dependency to the fossil fuels for power generation, environmental pollution is significantly reduced. Also, clean energy is generated by using hydro power. Regarding this, Doğuş Enerji Üretim ve Ticaret Anonim Şirketi. constructed a hydropower plant in Yusufeli district, Artvin province, Turkey. Based on the applied tool, the project boundary is considered as the National Electricity Grid of Turkey. The baseline scenario refers to the energy generation from fossil fuels.

The project includes installed generation capacity of 340.00 MWm/ 332.18 MWe with expected annual electricity generation of about 950,000 MWh (according to the feasibility report). As per the license issued by Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EMRA) all legal rights of the project belong to Doğuş Enerji Üretim ve Ticaret Anonim Şirketi.

Additional Information

Since the use of fossil fuels is avoided, greenhouse gas emission reductions can be achieved. The average annual generated electricity is expected to be 950,000 MWh according to the generation license and the emission reduction is estimated around 527,440 tCO2e annually. For the entire crediting period, 5,274,400 tCO2e are expected to be reduced.

VERIFICATION OUTCOME
Opinion

The GCC Project Verifier, LGAI Technological Center S.A., has verified and certified that the GCC Project Activity – ‘Artvin Hydroelectric Power Plant’ has correctly described the Project Activity in the Project Submission Form (version 6.0,/1/ dated 12/09/2023) including the applicability of the approved methodology ACM0002 Version 21.0. and meets the methodology applicability conditions, is additional and is expected to achieve the forecasted real and additional GHG emission reductions, complies with the monitoring methodology, has appropriately conducted local and global stakeholder consultation processes and has calculated emission reduction estimates correctly and conservatively; is likely to generate GHG emission reductions amounting to the estimated 527,440 tCO2e annual average, as indicated in the PSF which are additional to the reductions that are likely to occur in absence of the Project Activity and complies with all applicable GCC rules, including ISO 14064-2 and ISO 14064-3 and therefore requests the GCC Program to register the Project Activity; is not likely to cause any net-harm to the environment and/or society and complies with the Environmental and Social Safeguards Standard, and therefore requests the GCC Program to register the Project Activity, which is likely to achieve the requirements of the Environmental No-net-harm Label (E+) and the Social No-net-harm Label (S+); and is likely to contribute to the achievement of United Nations Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs), comply with the Project Sustainability Standard/and contribute to achieving a total of 04 SDGs, which is likely to achieve the Gold SDG certification label (SDG+).
