Project Brief

Uludağ Landfill Gas to Electricity Project, developed by the ITC-KA Enerji Üretim Sanayi ve Ticaret A.Ş.” (hereinafter referred to as the “project owner”) and it is located at Uludağ Solid Waste Landfill Area in Osmangazi District of Bursa Province in Turkey. The project includes the LFG extraction and its utilization for power generation.

The project activity is operational with a total of 8 gas engines with a total installed capacity of 11.32 MWe. The activity generates approximately 84,900 MWh/annum of energy and delivered to the national grid which is mainly dominated by thermal/fossil fuel-based power plant.

The Project activity is expected to result in 88,066 tCO2e average emission reductions annually and cumulative emission reduction of 880,666 tCO2e over the crediting period.

VERIFICATION OUTCOME
Opinion

4K Earth Science Private Limited has been contracted by ‘EKI Energy Services Limited’ to undertake verification of the project activity “Uludağ Landfill Gas to Electricity Project” in Turkiye. The verification was performed based on rules and requirements defined by GCC for the project activity.

The project involves installation of 8 gas engines of 1.415 MW installed capacity by ITC-KA Enerji Üretim Sanayi ve Ticaret A.Ş.and its in the district of Osmangazi of Bursa Province in Türkiye. The project LFG extraction and its utilization for power generation. The landfill receives waste from approximately 3 million people living in 12 municipalities of the Bursa Metropolitan Municipality.From the 5,228,945 tons of waste which it receives almost 59% is organic waste (paper,pulp, food waste,etc) Daily almost 2058 tons of waste is received. The plant aims to reduce environmental impact from the waste. Plant uses both the tech for covering the landfill area and gas extraction and also using gas engines to generate electricity with the LFG extracted. The project boundary includes the physical, geographical site of the landfill (Solid waste Disposal site) from where the landfill gas is captured and used for power generation, the power generation unit (gas turbine) at the project site using LFG for power generation and all other power plants/units connected physically to the Turkish national grid. The project reduces emissions by preventing atmospheric release and supplying electricity to the national grid. The Project activity is expected to result in 88,066 tCO2e average emission reductions annually and cumulative emission reduction of 880,666 tCO2e over the crediting period and generates 84,900 MWH/annum.

4K Earth Science Private Limited has verified and hereby certifies that the GCC Project Activity “Uludağ Landfill Gas to Electricity Project ”:

·        has correctly described the Project Activity in the Project Submission Form (version 2.2, dated 25/09/2023) including the applicability of the approved methodology ACM0001, version 19.0 and meets the methodology applicability conditions, is additional and is expected to achieve the forecasted real measurable and additional GHG emission reductions, complies with the monitoring methodology, has appropriately conducted local and global stakeholder consultation processes and has calculated emission reduction estimates correctly and conservatively;

·        is likely to generate GHG emission reductions amounting to the estimated 880,666 tCO2eq over the fixed crediting period of ten years, as indicated in the PSF, which are additional to the reductions that are likely to occur in absence of the Project Activity and complies with all applicable GCC rules, including ISO 14064-2 and ISO 14064-3, and therefore requests the GCC Program to register the Project Activity

·        is not likely to cause any net-harm to the environment and/or society and complies with the Environmental and Social Safeguards Standard, and therefore requests the GCC Program to register the Project Activity, which is likely to achieve the requirements of the Environmental No-net-harm Label (E+) and the Social No-net-harm Label (S+); and

·        is likely to contribute to the achievement of United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), comply with the Project Sustainability Standard, and contribute to achieving a total of 3 SDGs, which is likely to achieve the Silver  SDG certification label (SDG+).

·        The Project Activity complies with all the applicable requirement of the GCC Program and ICAO’s requirements on CORSIA Emissions Unit Eligibility Criteria and CORSIA Eligible Emissions Units, as per Clarification No 1., v1.3 paragraph 23-25, and the ACCs expected to be issued during the crediting period is likely to be CORSIA eligible and can be used by International Airlines for offsetting their emissions during all phases of CORSIA and therefore requests GCC Steering Committee to append CORSIA Certification label (C+) to this project

·        is likely to contribute to CORSIA Eligible Emission Units and has CORSIA Label (C+) certification valid till 31 December 2020. A written attestation from the Host country on double counting is not required until 31 December 2020 and the project was found meeting the applicable requirements prescribed by ICAO.
