Project Brief

The project activity consists of ComBio Energia replacing fossil fuel-fired boilers by renewable biomass one to generate steam for Compania Brasileira de Alumínio (CBA), an aluminum processing plant, where it is used in the alumina production phase. The fuel switching was carried out by ComBio Energia, a company whose main activity is the production and distribution of steam.
ComBio buys eucalyptus woodchips from dedicated plantations and other renewable biomasses to generate saturated steam in a 200 t/h boiler.


On May 2018, CBA signed a contract with ComBio in which the latter would provide the steam necessary to process bauxite. ComBio’s biomass boiler was installed within CBA’s plant. Operations started in March-2020 and production was ramped up in the following three months using eucalyptus woodchips.


The fuel switch from natural gas and residual fuel oil to renewable biomass is expected to reduce an average of 221,177 tCO2e per year during the first crediting period of the project. Therefore, GHG emission reductions are around 2.2 MtCO2e over the 10 years of the crediting period.

Besides contributing to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13 – Climate Action, the project is expected to contribute to other SDGs: 7; 8; 9 and 12.
